It’s open season at Portner Brewhouse for new hirees! And we just added two important people to the roster, the Head Brewer and the Head Chef.
Our beer whisperer, Brian McElvaney, hails from Wake Forest, North Carolina who developed his love of craft beer just like most people, by home brewing. After graduating high school, he decided to get to the roots of brewing and moved to Europe to enroll in a traditional German brewery apprenticeship. Afterwards, he worked for Vulcan Brewing near Cologne and then moved to Stone Brewing in Berlin. Luckily, he finally grew homesick and decided to move back to the states. Brian is excited to work on a system where he can brew and be able to serve it in house, instead of a larger production brewery. And lucky for him, he won’t even have to leave the building to get his favorites: jagerschnitzel and German potato salad. And there is a possibility that you could catch him after a shift washing his favorites down with either a pilsner or an IPA. When he gets a day off, Brian is probably hiking with his English bulldog.
Donnie Dennis, a local Alexandrian, is excited to help build and grow with a local startup. He has worked at both Black Market Bistro and The Russia House, but originally started off his culinary career at Old Town’s own Bilbo Baggins. There he found his passion for cooking and decided to attend Johnson & Wales, a popular culinary school. His experience consists of eastern European cuisines, seafood, and classical french. However, his favorite thing to cook with is tarragon. And while doing so, you could probably catch him noshing on bacon or whatever stinky cheese the grocery store has available. His words: “the stinkier, the better.” But what does this guy do when he isn’t chefing it up? You will probably catch Donnie riding his mountain or bmx bike around Wakefield Park while sipping a Cherry Coke.
